Divorce doesn’t have to mean destruction

An amicable divorce is a rare thing. Usually, one spouse feels bitter or vengeful and, without intervention, the court proceedings that follow can degenerate into total warfare.

Last year, after many years of working in the trenches of that war, two women lawyers independently decided to take time off from their practices. They’d had enough of the continuing hostilities.

Liza Segal, an advocate at the Johannesburg Bar, and Deanne Kahn, an attorney at Werksmans Attorneys, had sometimes worked together, and many times against each other.

They had seen the ugly side of divorce, the take-no-prisoners attitudes of clients, and its impact on families and especially children. They had seen clients impoverished by legal bills.
